Community

SQM wants to be a contribution, helping to ensure the well-being of communities located near its productive operations through different educational activities: it has donated support material to schools, destined resources to labour training scholarships, and it has concentrated its support on early technical education, so that benefited people may eventually help the company, locations, and the country with their acquired skills.

SQM has also played a key role in conservation of history and heritage of the region in which it is based. Many of its actions are aimed at preserving and promoting saltpetre industry legacy, supporting recovery of important national monuments, such as Humberstone and Santa Laura Offices (now declared World Heritage), the Humberstone Market, Abaroa House in Antofagasta (that also lodged two expositions concerning the Saltpetre Industry), and Chacabuco Office, among other sites.

Thus it has committed itself to initiatives focused on making communities appreciate and protect their heritage, such as the realization of the documentary "Salt of the Desert", that summarizes the history of saltpetre industry from its beginning to our days, which was distributed to all the educational establishments of Region II. In addition, the company offers educational trips to teachers, who will be in charge of transmitting such rich saltpetre legacy to future generations.
